My first tomato!!

I picked the very first red tomato out of my out-of-control tomato garden on Saturday!!!  I am SO EXCITED (can you tell?).  I have a gazillion other green tomatoes growing - I can't wait to have more :)

Last summer was my first year having my own garden, so I eagerly started a ton of tomatoes from seed and babied them through the summer.  I took such good care of them, but by mid-August I didn't have any tomatoes to show for it.  By mid-September, my tomato season ended with less than 20 tomatoes (and some of those were green!).

But this year I have a few advantages.
I emptied my huge compost bin and spread it all through the tomato garden.  Also, I purchased my tomato plants this year, so they got a bit of a head start (they came from a local greenhouse that gives all the funds to the school, so I felt good about my $1 tomatoes).

I planted Juliet, Big Boy, Beefstake, Bradywine, and something that is supposed to be yellow and striped.  The Juliet is, by far, doing the best, and that is the plant that I got my first tomato out of.

Hopefully I'll have many more tomatoes to show you guys in the weeks to come, as well as my amazing homemade tomato sauce recipe and the ridiculously delicious tomato scampi I make every summer.

Thanks for sharing my first-tomato-of-the-summer excitement with me!!!

I grew up in NJ, of course we spent our summers at the SHore -- i remember driving home from a long day at the beach & my step mom would always stop at a road-side vendor & buy a bucket of fresh juicy right-off-the-vine jersey tomatoes...nothing quite like them! congrats on your baby tomato!

Thanks so much for all of your kind comments, guys!!! I realized that the yellow one is called Lemon Boy (don't have any of those yet), but I've gotten a few more off of my Juliet plant. It is so exciting!!
